12/20/08 - New York Islanders at Nashville: W 0-1 Final

Observations:

Sixwire should NOT be allowed to perform the National Anthem anymore.

Vernon Fiddler with another goal?! Fids is on a roll; shaving that mustache off might have helped with his mojo.

Antti Pihlstrom needs to stop it with the rookie mistakes that are costing us penalties. The jury's still out on this kid for me. I'm not sure if I like him or not.

Shea Weber and Ryan Suter still remain very in sync with each other. They had a nice play at the end of the first period that was solid, classic defense. That is one pairing I hope Trotz doesn't decide to change anytime soon.

JP Dumont has been off with his puck control here lately. He needs to work on that.

True to his word, Coach Trotz put Martin Erat on a line with Peverley and Fiddler tonight. Erat did put forth more effort tonight than I have seen from him in a while. He was definitely passing more. He's learning to let go. However, he also found his way onto the top line AND the power play?! What the puck, Trotz? E needs to spend a little more time in the doghouse first.

David Legwand = continual major disappointment

Jordin Tootoo got moved up to the Pihlstrom-Legwand line for the night but I think he has better chemistry with Radek Bonk and Jerred Smithson.

Major Side Note - Dear Little Girl Sitting in Front of Us Tonight: What's with all the staring? Didn't your mother teach you that it's not nice to stare? Seriously...you were annoying.

Since I gave all the players Christmas wishes earlier this week, now it's time for mine: Can we maybe for once have this huge blowout game where we just score over and over and over again? I miss those kinds of games so much.

If we keep playing like this, I'm going to rename our team Sleepytime 2009. Seriously...I think I'll start recording these games and play them back for my as-of-yet unborn children when they are having a hard time falling asleep. 10 minutes in and they'll be out like a light.

I continue to find problems with our lack of offense each night. Even the top line isn't finding the back of the net. This is a major concern that needs to be fixed quickly if we have any chance of making it to the playoffs. And if we do happen to make it to the playoffs, we're going to have to step it up about 17 notches if we have any hope of winning even one game in the first round. Our goaltending and defense remains solid but we can not rely on that and just hope for the best.

Maybe most importantly, this year's team seems to lack the heart that I found so endearing with last year's team. I don't know if having more stability in ownership has given the guys reason to play it safe or what but I'm kind of disappointed. To quote a John Mayer song, "Something's missing and I don't know how to fix it".

  1. Agree overall... but i have to say i love Sixwire as an intermission band. Just not for the national anthem.

I also am beginning to wonder how much of the issues we're having offensively are because Trotz won't let anyone stay on one line combination long enough. The only players that have stayed together are Weber/Suter and Dumont/Arnott... and gee whiz... which ones are being the most successful?

It's a "chicken or egg" problem i guess: Are they successful because they are left together? Or left together because they are the only ones being successful? Hard to tell.
